Who am I? What is my purpose? What's my personal pathway to awareness?
Shamanic Astrology is based on the idea of "As Above, So Below, As Within, So Without". This is a way of saying that whatever is happening outside yourself is a reflection of the state of affairs inside you. What happens in the sky is reflected in you…and each other person. And vice versa. The same energy is operative inside and outside. As individuals, we are part of the cosmos, and the cosmos is part of us; you and all that is created are interactive.
Simply said, if I look at the planet Mars in the sky and notice that it is 90 degrees from another planet, the moon or the sun, then I can anticipate that this relationship is reflected in relationships on earth. And in the case of Mars combined with other planets, I know, like our brothers and sisters of 5000 years ago, there's a possibility positively of expressing male energy, activating and accomplishing-- or negatively, conflict or war on earth. If I see Venus, I will think softness and loving expression and femininity, and a different kind of power..
Right now, as an example, for the last year or two and continuing for several years into the future…say 2012 and more….Pluto, the "mini" planet of transformation is near galactic center….moving forward and backward and forward again in the area of 24 to 30 degrees of the sign of Sagittarius. And we are seeing…and will continue to experience….change in a very large way. And those changing times are reflected in the theme for this healing faire….Pathways to Transformation. Today, you will want to add the fact that the out of bounds Moon is conjunct Pluto and the Galactic Center….big time change which began a year and a half ago and will continue for another year and a half. Right now, we should be feeling the peak change, the sense that we are exceeding all bounds.
We use the word Shamanic because recognition of these energies goes back to prehistory and because they are actually experienced. In some ways, ancient humanity was more aware of the sky than we are today; they lived under night skies, they observed and recorded, they timed their planting and harvesting to the changing moon. Students of Shamanic Astrology spend time under the night sky, they consider old cultures, they learn from the old myths, many related to the movement of the skies.
Shamanic astrology differs from the astrology most of us are familiar with. While it recognizes the Sun as the powerful engine of life, the source of remarkable quantities of energy, the sun is not necessarily the driving force in an individual chart. About 60 % of people simply do not relate to their Sun sign. As you may have observed, sun sign astrology sometimes doesn't work! Until maybe twenty years ago, I understood myself to be a Scorpio with a Moon in Aries. It made sense; I had a lot of drive and a lot of curiosity about everything.
But then I went off to an ashram for several years, pulled there by my ascendant in Virgo that wanted to do sacred work, with the south node in the house (Aries), Neptune and Jupiter conjunct. I certainly don't operate from the Sun sign today….I don't even read about Scorpio. Because it's now abundantly clear that I function as grandmother Spider doing my sacred work, via the Virgo ascendant.
Shamanic Astrology focuses on the moon and its south node as the indicator of what one is like when one is born, an indicator of the attributes and skills one has already in their tool kit. As a child and young person, we generally function from this personal, past knowledge…for those who believe in reincarnation…or simply what we were born with. The chart will reflect challenges and opportunities and we begin to work with them as we grow and mature.
What is wonderful about Shamanic Astrology is that it locates the intention of this lifetime. That is, what you want to do, how you want to individuate, how you want to evolve, how you want to help the globe change and evolve, your personal pathway to transformation! And, heaven knows, we are in a critical, crucial time. We can use all the information available to save our civilization and our beautiful earth! Not to mention finding personal joy.
Shamanic Astrologers identify this individual thrust, by observing the sky at the moment of birth. What planets and stars were on the horizon….what else was going on in the sky? What planet came up first? What are the relationships of other planets to your ascendant point? And in what house is the north node of the moon? Using just two indicators, the ascendant and the house of the north node at the time of birth, your individual life purpose and the choice of job among twelve houses is determined.
Like any other astrology, Shamanic Astrology considers a variety of factors. For today's short presentation, I'd like to focus on life purpose as reflected in each of the signs. Learning what your specialization is, utilizing the house of the north node requires a closer look. And, of course, determining what challenges and what assistance you have comes after that. I'd like to help you with that; if you are interested, see me at Booth 12.
We'll look at the moon, your current lineage, because most people know where the Moon was at the time of their birth. Keep in mind, though, that you will be moving away from this as your primary expression, moving toward the sign on your ascendant. I'm looking for volunteers who know their Ascendant sign. As an example, I give my own ascendant in Virgo, north node in 7th house Pisces. Another example is the chart of my son, Greg Garceau, who is also reading charts today in our Booth, number 12. His moon at birth was in Scorpio, Ascendant in Gemini, and he has a 2nd house north node. (Taurus). Listed below are key phrases related to each of the twelve ascendant houses, indicating life purpose and archetypes:
